THE WAXING MOON SERIES | 3 parts | 2017-2021

this is an ongoing experimental series that I go back to whenever I’m lacking inspiration. The only rules are:
- shot principally in black and white digital
- shot primarily alone - no production crews or assistants. Extra people can be used as performers, but all technical and artistic execution must be done singularly.
- when an idea enters the mind while in the midst of making one of these, it MUST BE SHOT. It does NOT need to be in the final cut.

PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST SERIES | 3 parts | 2018-2019

this is a series I carried out throughout my time at University. It was conceived out of a lack of things to do and most of our friends being gone at the end of the winter term. It’s a sort of pseudo-documentary thing, following my friends at a very particular, non-curated point in time. It lacks substance, which I think is important sometimes. It should not be the paramount goal for an artist to seek pure, abstract aesthetic, however I think it’s something that is innate for artists to exercise their aesthetic muscle in a low-stakes form like this. It’s a bit like freewriting for filmmakers.

BrianJohnson_Exercise3_Draft1_FIPR339 | 2018

this is a real assignment that i submitted for my editing class (and got a 95% on) while at university. It’s about pretty obvious stuff and was very fun to make.

I Hope Everything Goes Well | 2017

this is a film I made as an expression a certain kind of heartbreak. Not romantic, not platonic, not entirely nameable. It’s about the effort that goes into producing work in a public way - a concert, a show, a screening, a party, anything where you’re putting yourself out there for people to see - and the let down that happens when important people in your life dont make it. Like when you’re 12 and you have a soccer match and your dad doesn’t show up. That sort of thing.
