A layabout 20-something. A grad school drug dealer. A mysterious girl. A spiritual leader. A Welcome Distraction is a sprawling character study of Ernest Prinze, a young man stewing in the aftermath of a family tragedy. We get to watch a man drift through a life as he desperately tries to let the vestiges of a distressed family fade away. This desire for separation leads him to increasingly abstract venues... but will the past let him go?
This is a fully self-funded independent feature film, shot over a whole year, from February 2023 and March 2024. It was created with the support of the entirety of the young filmmaking community in Vancouver, BC. We, the creative team behind A Welcome Distraction, are forever indebted to the generosity of the technicians and talent in this town.
